In the supply chain industry, minimising cost and maximising efficiency are two of the primary objectives of a supply chain warehouse manager. The warehouse needs to be operating at full speed in order to keep the supply chain moving. Any halts or abrupt stops in the chain can be detrimental to the entire organisation. A clean, organised warehouse can help increase efficiency and minimise risk. Here are some tips on how to raise your organisational skills as a warehouse supervisor. Unused Machinery Any machinery for automatic or manual moving in the warehouse that is not being used should be stored out of the way. This can include forklifts, pallet jacks, ladders, and more. Designate a safe storage area for your machines that can be accessed by employees if needed. This prevents blocking passages and ensures that there are no halts because of obstructions. If there is broken machinery or tools that require maintenance, store them in a different area than the unused working machines. Clearly identify zones for broken machines, so that employees do not get confused and attempt to use them. Place anything that requires maintenance in a space that is unused and can stay out of the way of any important supply line paths throughout the warehouse. Equipment Disorganised equipment can lead to hazards in the warehouse. Box cutters, for instance, can cause harm if stepped on or rolled over by rubber tires. Instruct your employees to keep track of equipment and place it back in a safe storage area when they are done using it. You can create a designated location for equipment in a location that is easily accessible and visible to employees. Using bins, drawer units, and shelves with labels is a great way to ensure everything gets put back in its place. Instruct your employees to put equipment away when they are done. The organisation of equipment can reduce risk, minimise replacement costs, and save time. Pallet Organisation Empty pallets should be placed in a secure and accessible location, either in a corner of the warehouse, or on empty shelves on the pallet racking. Unused pallets should never be in the way, nor should they take up space on the shelves between full pallets. Forklift drivers and pallet jack operators should be able to go down the line to move full pallets quickly. By removing unused pallets and placing them in one location, you ensure that the process doesn’t get bogged down by empty gaps on the shelves. Stick to the Schedule Make sure your warehouse staff is comfortable with their individual schedules. This will help create consistency, and the employees can keep track of their shifts easier than a constantly changing schedule. Ensure that breaks are taken on time in order to keep things moving, and be sure to enforce mandatory breaks. Employees who do not rest can become tired out more easily. Make the daily schedule easily accessible by all who need to check it. This allows employees to check for themselves instead of finding someone to ask. Stick to these organisational strategies and you’ll be sure to see improvements in minimising cost, risk, and maximising efficiency.
